Classroom News

Dear Parents,

We have entered that "we catch everything" part of the year.  We have had fevers and headaches in the classroom and some family members have battled the flu.  Good hand washing is important.  I wipe down the desks, keyboards, door knobs, and doorjambs. Lots of fluids and rest will help everyone to stay healthy.

Work is collected for your child when they are absent.  Please be sure that all work is made up.  It is beyond me to track down six children a day to bring me made up work.  Three days after an absence should be plenty of time to make up the work.  Feel free to notify the office if you will be stopping by to pick up make-up work.

Our chrome books correct and are graded by the website as soon as the student completes the test.  Please ask your child his/her grade as it is given automatically.

           Religion
This week are are learning about Confirmation.  Students know that this is one of the Sacraments of Initiation.  The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are given to us to use to spread the Word of God as disciples of Jesus.

                                                                  St. Kateri Mission Statement

We at St. Kateri School strive to continue to develop each child's relationship with God by promoting a Christ-centered Catholic academic education focused on the Gospel message of love, responsibility and service to others.

                         Math

In math we are on the geometry module.  We have about eleven more classes on the subject.  Some things we learned are the difference between lines and line segments, four kinds of angles, parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines.

                        ELA
We now know our seven parts of speech.  We've completed a few math libs to try our hand at parts of speech.

We are focusing on craft and structure in our Progress book.  This book helps students to see how writings develop as they analyze finished pieces and then apply what they've learned to their own writing.  Mrs. Smith worked with them this week on Close reading and she will be here with us again next week.

                  Science
We have been collecting data for our ball and ramp experiment.  Each student has a partner and work in the hall or the classroom, predicting and measuring.  This is what they like to do best.  Get down and get busy!

                    Social Studies

We will begin the French and Indian War.  New York's part in this war give us more information about some of the history of our state.  You may want to read pages of the Social Studies Weekly newspaper to keep up with your child!

               Grading

In the Parent Handbook which is part of the school calendar that you received, there is an explanation of the grading system.  Your fourth grader will receive a percentage score.  When papers are graded with a letter grade, we must attach a numerical score to be averaged.  A=97,  A- =91, B+ =88, B=85, B- = 82, C+ = 79,  C= 75, C- =72, D =68, and F = 65.

            Reminder:

Winter weather is upon us.  Please label all winter clothing with your child's name.  Boots, jackets, hats, mittens and snow pants are a must.  Like last year, if the wind chill is at or above 20 degrees, we will be heading outdoors.  The playground is off limit as the cold and wet pieces make it dangerous.  Children not appropriately dressed, will need to stand in the parking lot with me and miss out playing in the snow.

Catholic Schools' Week was quite the celebration.  Check out the school's website for pictures of some of the activities.  Thank you for sharing our heritage at Mass and also the social at Bill Gray's.  What a crowd!

Have a great weekend.
